hen Ford launched the Mk3 Escort and Sierra hatchbacks to replace the Mk2 Escort and Cortina it left a saloon-sized gap in its line-up. In 1983 though, the four-door Orion arrived to plug the void and win over some of the customers who weren’t keen on a hatchback. The Orion was initially offered with 1.3- or 1.6-litre CVH engines and a choice of GL and Ghia trim levels, the latter in carb-fed form or with the same fuel-injected set-up as the Escort XR3i.
