Ican’t resist, and I apologise in advance. But during our Zoom chat, I ask 23-year-old Tom Borrow a decidedly cheesy and soundbite-ish question (my mitigation being that a certain A-list superstar once gave me a surprisingly direct and fascinating answer). Does he have a favourite composer?

He thinks for several moments. ‘I’m going to disappoint you, sorry,’ he replies carefully. ‘It’s too difficult to say. If I picked a composer, I’d feel so guilty about the others. And one of the most important things for me now in my artistic development is not to limit myself to a niche. I’m trying as much as possible to be the universal pianist. For the time being, at least, I try to play everything. And after all, that’s not so hard when you love everything.’
