OUR EUROPEAN ODYSSEY pt 18

A YEAR ON the road is a long time. Not that this is a bad thing – far from it. In fact, we can safely say that the past 12 months travelling throughout Europe, down into Africa and onwards to Asia have been some of the best times we’ve enjoyed as a family.

In addition to many wonderful experiences, splendid memories and unforgettable moments, we’ve learnt a great deal, not only about ourselves, but about touring in general.

As we celebrate 12 months of the Big European Odyssey, a trip we are happily continuing into its second year, we are all delighted to share with you a host of our favourite countries, attractions, campsites, wild camping spots and essential touring equipment.

TOP CAMPSITES

We have stayed at a wide variety of campsites during the past year, ranging from the smaller, family-run sites, all the way through to huge sprawling places that seem more like compact towns. Every one of them has had its own unique appeal, but these are our favourites.

■ Noirmoutier Huttopia (France)

Set in the Vendée, boasting a unique location on Sableaux Beach and backing onto a pine forest, this site is the epitome of relaxation. In addition to a welcoming Airstream bar, it has its own beach, a children’s play area and bike hire. The charming village of Noirmoutier-en-l’Ile is a short walk or bike ride away, as are the main tourist attractions of the island.
