CLAY WORKS STUDIOS

We have had a lot going on at Clay Works Studios over the past month – far too much to cover in one issue of this magazine. The biggest event in our calendar was Spring Fling, the regional Open Studios fair showcasing the best of local art and craft talent throughout Dumfries and Galloway.

It has been held here at the end of May for the past 20 years, and as far as Open Studio events go, it is a pretty big deal. Thousands of people take the opportunity to visit some of the one hundred artists’ studios over three days, and while most visitors are from Scotland, a good proportion of them come from well beyond the border.

Although it is predominantly focused on artists opening their studios to the public, in an attempt to stay fresh, the organisers offer a degree of funding for makers to develop experimental work, alongside bursaries to encourage new makers in the region to get involved; the result being that each year, alongside the open studios, there is usually something different to see or experience.
