FOR months he asked doctors when he could get his face fixed so he could leave his home and face the world again. But the decision wasn’t an easy one – there were plenty of risks he had to take into account to have a face transplant.

Surgeons would have to totally remove what was left of his scarred skin and if the procedure failed he’d literally be left without a face. There was also a high risk he could die, so the decision wasn’t one to be taken lightly.

But Joe DiMeo wanted to start his life again – and his wish has come true. It
