BIRDS OF PREY
IN ITS native America, the red-tailed hawk is ubiquitous from northern Canada right through the States and beyond. By preference this buzzard lives in lightly wooded country with access to open areas. It is also known to nest on buildings, such the office blocks which overlook Central Park on New York, where it takes a steady toll on the feral pigeons; and, famously, on camera at Cornell University, I have found my birds equally at home in open fields or close woodland, where, while they are not as agile as the short-winged goshawk, you get some fine flights.
