A TRINITY OF TRACKS

CLASPING metal hand grips and stepping up a six-metre metal ladder clinging to sheer granite rock face may not be everybody’s idea of fun. It certainly wasn’t for a nervous young lady ahead of us being coaxed to the summit by an encouraging “you can do it” friend. As we gather at the top, a broad smile erupts over the young lady’s face as she soaks in blissful views of the surrounding countryside far into the distance.

With views in all directions, Castle Rock in the Porongurup Ranges near the south coast of Western Australia seems a fitting starting point for our triangle of trails journey. We came up with that idea while poring over a map and realising that three great southern locations, Mount Barker, Albany and Demark, are hubs for some fantastic hiking trails. In addition, each of the three locations is conveniently linked by road, forming a triangle.
