IS TOO much curry and spicy foods holding Indians back from excelling in competitive sport? Will an Indian ever win the Comrades Marathon?

Elston Naicker became the first local runner of Indian descent to achieve a record time of six hours and three minutes in the 2023 Comrades, sending Facebook and Twitter users into a frenzy. He broke Poobie Naidoo’s mark of six hours and seven minutes set in 1986.

Tete Dijana won this year’s Comrades for the second consecutive year with a record-breaking time of five hours and 13 minutes.

Now let’s look at Naicker’s performance.

He finished in 71st position in a field of 14 896 runners,
