Google’s first new slate in half a decade isn’t only out to prove that Android can cut it on gadgets other than smartphones. It also comes bundled with a power-providing speaker dock, enabling it to double up as a smart screen. So while the Pixel Tablet is priced to compete with Apple’s entry-level iPad, this 2-in-1 approach means it sits in its own little niche.
The Tablet itself plays it safe on styling, withlandscape rather than portrait (the webcam built into the centre of the top bezel is a giveaway). There’s no family resemblance to the Pixel phone range – but then, a full-width camera shelf would have been overkill for this 8MP job.
