SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT

Jewish MOH Recipients

Thank you for the article about Sgt. Benjamin Levy (“The Kid From Brooklyn,” Spring 2023 issue). That said, I am obliged to nitpick. The author states there were six Jews awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism during the American Civil War. That figure comes from Sidney Gumpertz (himself a Medal of Honor recipient for WWI) in his book According to the National adds cavalryman Isaac Gans to the list. This seemed to have been an erroneous reference to Isaac Gause, who was not Jewish. The four Jewish Medal of Honor recipients from the American Civil War who are not in dispute are: Levy; Sgt. Maj. Abraham Cohn; Color Sgt. Leopold Karpeles; and Pvt. David Or-banski (also spelled Urbanski). Ironically the last one served under Gen. Grant during the infamous General Order Number 11.
