VIP Unit cannot be allowed to become a law unto itself

THE nation was engulfed with outrage this week as a video made the rounds showing the vicious attack of citizens by VIP Unit members of the SAPS.

Eight officers of the unit, which has been identified as the protection unit of Deputy President Paul Mashatile, were shown violently pummelling helpless citizens.

This type of behaviour by a group of professionally trained police officers is abhorrent. What is clear here is a blatant abuse of power by SAPS members who were assigned to protect and serve the citizens at large.
