he medieval and early-modern periods provided other outlets for devotion to Christ's death. Pilgrims travelled to the holy land to pray or “holy mountains” – small chapels located among hilly terrains housing scenes from the lives of Christ and the saints. Many of these are found in northern Italy and together with the Shroud of Turin show a strong desire for tangible ways of directing one's devotions to Christ's death and resurrection.
