During the second half of the 19th century, the accepted calibre for revolvers intended for military use — so-called Army revolvers — was about .450 of an inch. Anything much less than that was regarded as lacking sufficient “stopping power”, and revolvers of this size were regarded as fine for dealing with “civilised” enemies such as other Europeans.
