Don’t have a heart attack during power cuts!

In Issue 659’s Cover Feature (‘Survive the Landline Switch-Off’, pictured right) you discuss what happens when there’s a power cut after the copper network is turned off in 2025. You mention that BT is offering battery backups to power the routers of vulnerable customers such as those without mobile reception. But there’s an important point to remember here. If the backup time is only one hour, and the backup kicks in as soon as an outage occurs, then you’d better not have a heart attack or house fire after this hour!

Instead, during an outage, conserve the backup battery by only turning it on when you need to make an emergency call. Looking at the user guide for BT’s Cyberpower Back-up (), there doesn’t
