iPad users will regret switching to new Fire tablet

I was intrigued by Amazon’s new Fire Max 11 tablet until you mentioned that it still runs the highly limited version of Android that makes the existing Fire tablets so useless (‘Question of the Fortnight’, Issue 659, pictured below). I bought a Fire HD 8 last year, thinking I wouldn’t mind not having all the apps I take for granted on my iPad. However, I soon grew fed up with the Fire’s meagre selection. It’s like a car boot sale compared with Apple’s app megastore.

You say that some long-term iPad users might choose the new Fire when the time comes to buy a new tablet, but I can’t see it happening. The Fire might cost over £100 less, but if they’ve previously paid for an iPad they’re not likely to be particularly price conscious. If they do swap an iPad for a Fire, I predict they’ll regret it and switch back within months.

Roger Crane

Roger’s right that the biggest drawback. As for the Fire Max 11, we think it’s a genuine rival to the iPad despite its limitations. We’ll review it soon and let you know whether the hype is justified.
