Letter of the week
Polite reminder
JASON GOODWIN highlights the recent proliferation of patronising signs in public spaces (‘Signs of the times’, June 21). On the London Underground, people are exhorted not to stare, inappropriately touch someone or occupy a seat when someone else clearly needs it. This is common-sense politeness. I doubt very much that anyone who doesn’t already know this is going to be educated by a nannying poster.

That old chesnut
THE Editor’s reminiscence of his time at Tattersalls () reminded me to write to endorse the mention in the piece) that the colour chesnut should always spelt without a middle ‘t’. This is not exclusive to the Suffolk horse—Tattersalls and Weatherbys maintain that tradition for the Thoroughbred. Had I received a pound sterling for every errant ‘t’ removed from the proofs of the catalogues during my brief career at Tattersalls in the early 1970s as required by the firm, I could have bought a small island.
