Lady of the pew

JONATHAN NOTLEY (Letters, April 12) reminded me of a memorable church service in the 1950s. We were on a family holiday in Scotland, with a few days in Braemar. My father imagined he could get us into Crathie Kirk to attend a service with the Royal Household.

We duly turned up at Crathie in good time for the service. The usual low-profile security people were present, but my father espied a little old lady walking towards the door dressed in black, with a hat that reminded me of Grandma in a Giles cartoon.
