Record rainfall for the Western Cape

RAGING torrents over the past few weeks in the Western Cape have resulted in storm water causing damage to roads and infrastructure in some parts the province. Since most of the Cape is a winter rainfall area, Cape Town receives much more rain in winter than in summer.

The downpour has also led to a significant increase in dam levels in the province. By late June, the Theewaterskloof Dam in the Overberg district, the largest dam in the Western Cape, was 97,4% full. During the same time last year it was 77% full.

While the rain is a welcome relief for dam levels, many parts of the province have also experienced the destruction that comes with such severe weather conditions. The Cederberg Municipality on the West Coast suffered some of the worst damage when flooding in the town of Citrusdal washed away
