THE ABBESS: HILDA OF WHITBY
As the abbess of Whitby – a monastery for both men and women – Saint Hilda (614–680) headed one of the great religious centres of northeastern England. Notwas, in part, called to decide on which date the English should celebrate Easter. According to the historian Bede, Hilda was so respected that even kings and princes sought her advice.
