There was a time when chain maintenance was a proper faff – remove the chain from your motorcycle; place it into a tin of very gloopy grease; put the tin of grease and chain on top of a cooker hob; boil grease so it runs thin and gets into all nooks and crannies; remove tin from hob without burning fingers; lift chain out and let it drip runny grease back into the tin; let chain (and tin) cool; refit gloopy chain to motorcycle. And that’s without the additional hassle of cleaning the chain in the first place.
