The role of negative space in our quilts

This month I am going to be exploring the use of negative space in patchwork design and how it affects the quilting choices we make. The thought of all that negative space on a quilt can be a delight for some and a source of terror for others. I hope that after reading this article, you will be less ‘negative’ about those wide-open spaces.

First things first, what is negative space?

Negative space can be seen in lots of different scenarios.

• It may be a plain block, next to a heavily pieced block.
