Deep breath
It’s not only air-breathing animals shows that scalloped hammerhead sharks do it when hunting in deep, cold water. With their copious blood supply, gills rapidly lose heat to cold surroundings, so hammerheads close their gill slits to prevent their body temperature dropping so low that they cannot hunt.
