CHAMPIONSHIP HOOPS it wasn’t, but while the rest of the United States was engrossed in the NBA play-offs, on a public court in San Diego some of Wales’ finest were ballin’.

Well, Mason Grady, age-grade basketball player, son of a Commonwealth Games athlete in mum Julie, brother of a Welsh cap in 7ft-tall Ashton, was doing his thing against some locals. According to the Cardiff centre, Max Llewellyn, James Ratti, Teddy Williams and Ellis Bevan at the very least “had a bit of fun”. When pushed, the 21-year-old admits that that it’s best if all concerned “probably stick to rugby…”

His household growing up was admittedly basketball-daft. As the Wales centre puts it: “It was around 15 or 16 when I had to decide whether I was going to stick with rugby or maybe do basketball. I decided to go with rugby.
