Freshwater Saltwater
UMI Arts Gallery 7 July to 31 August 2023
Queensland
Freshwater Saltwater is UMI Arts’ signature annual group exhibition, showcasing the talent and rich diversity of mid-career, senior, and established member artists. The title reflects a metaphorical ideology of mainland Aboriginal custodians reliant on and connected to freshwater, and Torres Strait Islanders who are surrounded by saltwater. Freshwater flows through rivers and streams, moving always towards the coastal saltwater of the sea until waters meet, flowing together. This exhibition represents the “flowing together” of First Nations peoples’ cultures and stories, from rainforest to desert to island.

Adelaide
The Ramsay Art Prize is a biennial, acquisitive prize for contemporary Australian artists under forty working in any medium, including sculpture, painting, drawing, photography, installation, and the moving image. This year’s finalist exhibition showcases the work of twenty-seven artists, including Ida Sophia, whose winning single shot, single-channel video work, Witness, 2022, filmed at The Pool of Siloam in Wirmalngrang/Beachport in regional South Australia, depicts the artist in performance, undergoing a repetitive and intense series of submergences that take a single baptism to the level of relentless obsession.
