SATURDAY JULY 1

MAID IN MANHATTAN

Please turn down

TVNZ 2, 7.00pm

The first in a Jennifer Lopez double feature on this channel tonight is her terrible rags-to-riches romantic-comedy fairy tale in which she’s the Latina Cinderella hotel cleaner to Ralph Fiennes’ WASP politician Prince Charming. Say this, though, it was certainly Fiennes’ best romcom since his laugh-a-minute turn in The English Patient. (2002)

WEIRD: THE AL YANKOVIC STORY

Accordion crimes

Rialto, 8.30pm

Daniel Radcliffe continues his curious post-Potter career in this biopic of pop parody pioneer and comedian-accordionist Weird Al Yankovic, which, true to form, plays like a parody of pop biopics and has, kind of time doing it. Evan Rachel Wood plays 1980s Madonna, who is so keen to get the “Yankovic bump”, from Al covering a song, she starts an affair with him, while other supporting turns include Jack Black as Wolfman Jack, Conan O’Brien as Andy Warhol and Weird Al himself as a record company guy. Possibly funnier if you liked back in the day. (2022)
