For years I wasn’t happy with my body. Big, small or somewhere in between, I’d always find myself scrutinising my weight, never satisfied with how I looked. My happiness was dictated to me by the number that appeared on the scales. It was an unhealthy way to live, but something I did for decades.
An early developer, I started puberty in primary school and with it came the feelings of self-consciousness about being bigger than my friends. I can remember being called ‘fat’ by other children, and sucking my stomach in during swimming lessons. The sad thing was that I wasn’t even overweight – I was just carrying a bit of puppy fat.
As a teenager
