Mchunu clamps down on water quality

non-compliance targeted

THE decision by Senzo Mchunu, the minister of Water and Sanitation, to issue criminal notices to non-compliant municipalities regarding water quality, is the correct one.

“He has the best interest of the country’s citizens at heart,” said Professor Anthony Turton, a water expert.

This followed the preliminary Blue, Green and No Drop Watch reports that were released earlier this month by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS).

They revealed an overall decline in the quality of drinking water. The reports showed that in the 2021/2022 municipal financial year, some municipalities did not meet the minimum SANS 241 (South African National Standard) standard and could have posed a potential health risk to consumers.
