COMMUNITY SPIRIT
I read with great interest Jamie Dickson’s column in issue 499 regarding the encouragement he has received from fellow guitarists in recording his acoustic album. This generosity of spirit struck a chord with me as I only took up the guitar seriously during lockdown and, to be honest, at an age where achieving some level of competence rather than mastery is probably my most realistic goal.
I have, however, had the good fortune since then to make friends with a number of excellent amateur and pro guitarists, all of whom have been unfailingly supportive and generous with their time, knowledge and enthusiasm. Being able to spend time with friends whose level of ability and musicianship is beyond your pay grade really makes you up your game, and it has been a better education than any amount of YouTube videos and the like.
More importantly, the camaraderie and friendship has been an unexpected delight and has enriched my life and the experience of learning to play beyond measure. Personally, I
