CREATURES OF THE CREEK

This is a big first for me, and I’m not only talking about the lures and techniques: I write about stuff that I do – or at least what anglers I know do – but this is my first fishing article about lures and techniques which haven’t yet caught me a bass. I am going to think aloud here and a lot of what I say is going to be pure speculation, but because I tend to see lure fishing as problem solving, I passionately believe that the venture into fishing with ‘creature baits’ is going to solve some bass related problems for me, and hopefully produce some good fish over the next few seasons.

WHAT ARE CREATURE BAITS?

I don’t kill any bass to take home and eat, but most of the anglers I know who do tell me that the stomachs of the bass contain crab. If we accept that a crab shell is hard and is going to take longer to break down and digest when compared to something like sandeels or prawns, it comes as no shock that bass in estuaries seem to spend a lot of time feeding on these types of food.
