CHICHESTER CLASS WINNER SIMON CURWEN

imon Curwen is a seasoned racer and his sailing tactics during the race were remarkable. His routing skill and his seamanship – constantly trimming sails and steering the fastest course – made it a more exciting race, and saw him come back from the brink of disaster to take line honours after 234 days at sea. He was leading the race in his Biscay 36, , before a knockdown 1,200 miles from Cape Horn broke the main casting on the head of his Hydrovane self-steering gear. The main casting translates the vane movement into an up and down movement through the piston that turns the rudder. It was a part neither Hydrovane or Curwen expected
