Keep the Lights On
Thure Lindhardt, Zachary Booth, Julianne Nicholson
Queer American filmmaker, a fabulous new polysexual relationship drama, coming out this autumn — more on that then — so it’s a good time to brush up on his achingly sensitive, semi-autobiographical gay love story from 2012, which still crackles with sensuality and sometimes discomfiting truth. Etching an on-off romance between a filmmaker and a lawyer, bound by soul-deep attraction but thwarted by addiction, it’s neither salacious nor sentimental in its perceptive dissection of how gay men live and love and fuck: many of us will identify a bit of ourselves in each character, and the film’s sympathies are duly split.
