ENGLAND Hawthorne Cottage Caravan Site, Gloucestershire

Nestled in the Forest of Dean is Hawthorne Cottage, a 10-pitch, adult-only site offering peace, tranquillity and walks into the forest straight from the front gate.

The well-kept site is pet friendly and each pitch is hardstanding with electric hook-up. There's a simple and spotless facilities block with two toilets and a coin-metered shower, plus there's recycling facilities and free WiFi. The bird feeders dotted around the site are a nice touch, and when we stayed, the symphony of birdsong from the surrounding woodland was amazing.

The friendly and hard-working site owner has an encyclopaedic knowledge of local walks, places to visit and eateries, and is happy to suggest things to do and lend maps and guidebooks to allow visitors to get the most from their stay.

Once pitched, we didn't move our ’van until we left, such was the choice of forest walks on offer. On one of the days, we followed the Heritage Trail in and around the nearby village of Bream and it was interesting to spot some of the area's hidden industrial history within the beautiful natural environment.
