HERE’S AN ANECDOTE that might have come directly from the Bobby Heenan School of Outdated References (which, in itself, is an outdated reference). In an episode of I Love Lucy, Lucy Ricardo and her landlady/BFF Ethel Mertz are in the kitchen complaining about their husbands’ obsessions with watching television. And, on this night, the TV is showing boxing.

Lucy: “It’s always the same—Rocky Somebody vs. Kid Something-or-other.”

Fred: (hurriedly leaving apartment) “I got to go down to the corner and get some ginger ale!”

Lucy: “Well, he sure was in a hurry.”
