ABC OF ADVENTURE

Every bike is capable of adventure. I haven’t met a road rider who doesn’t have a story about a slippery muddy road. But while any one of us can tie a tent to any type of bike and eventually navigate a way to a campsite for a night under the stars, there might come a time when the sportsbike feels too cramped, the twisties are too heavily policed, and the road less travelled has more appeal than finding the quickest way from A to latte.

THE MOTORCYCLE

ADVENTURE BIKES are designed to strike a balance between on- and off-road riding. The best adventure bike for you will depend entirely on how much off-road riding you intend to do and of that riding, how deep into the bush you intend on going.

Forget anything with a 17-inch front wheel – any type of off-road riding will be more enjoyable with at least a 19-inch front hoop. The larger diameter improves the bike’s ability to roll over obstacles such as rocks, roots and ruts by increasing the angle of the approach. It means more feel through the ’bars and, importantly, more options in terms of dual-purpose tyres, too.

Adventure bikes have relaxed, long-distance ergonomics. Make sure you test ride all potential bikes to ensure the ergonomics suit your build and try and leave your ego at the front door and find
