Getaway

A TALE OF THREE CITIES

TRAVEL Europe

We flew into Amsterdam Airport Schiphol from Johannesburg and took the Eurostar to London St Pancras station. It had snowed, and we were equally thrilled and appalled by how beautiful and freezing it was as we Ubered through kaleidoscopic London in December.

The following day we began what would soon become a familiar ritual over the next three weeks: suiting up in layers of socks, boots, gloves, beanies, scarves and winter coats and heading out to explore. By day three, we had lost legwarmers, a hat and a scarf on either a bus or train but were hopping on and off public transport like seasoned pros. And we weren't quite so cold.

After London, we travelled via Paris to Amsterdam, experiencing three capitals, cultures and languages. We covered a lot of ground. Waited for many trains. Atechildren. We were amazed how this trip – and our many tactile interactions with history, culture, art and food – enriched, expanded and rewarded their sense of self. Here are the highlights and travel tips.

Nature's Gift
Scenes of The Shire in The Lard of the Rings may spring to mind when visiting the village of Hogsback. It's as lush, green and magical as J.R.R. Tolkien described the land he imagined in his books. Fortunately, you don't have to travel to Middle Eart
