Richard Ansdell
PAINTING SIGNS FOR A CIRCUS MAY not be a conventional route to becoming an acclaimed artist, but it certainly didn’t do Richard Ansdell any harm. Born in Liverpool in 1815, Richard was educated at a school for orphans as his father — a ship’s pulley operator — died when he was young. On leaving school, Richard trained in art under WC Smith, a portraitist in Chatham, Kent. Then he travelled to the Netherlands, where he painted those circus signs.
