CANARIES
AFTER a late start, breeding has finally got underway properly in the canary shed. As the hours of daylight have increased, Dave and I have been conducting more regular checks of the physical signs of breeding condition, such as hens' vents become a swollen oval.
This year it was at this point that we discovered that several unflighted birds kept back as hens were, unfortunately, cocks. In most years weletting a few extras go to other fanciers and also a couple of losses after we had let other birds go, we were fairly low on older hens.
