MELBOURNE can be a pretty volatile place weather-wise around this time of year. When you venture out for a cruise, meet or show, you just never can tell whether you’ll be fat-arming it in full sunshine or dodging hailstones.

Sure enough, over the first weekend in May, Meguiar’s MotorEx 21 was stricken with chilly temps and sporadic rain. Fortunately, that didn’t stop around 20,000 hardy punters showing up to gawk and gasp at 800 of Australia’s top cars, and you better believe there was plenty to talk about besides the weather.

As always, there was loads to check out across the various pavilions, with the biggest spotlight reserved for Saturday’s unveilings. A return to the tradition of unveiling each car one at a time was well-received, as every builder and/or owner gave a little insight into their creations.

The roster of brand-new builds wasn’t as big as last year’s post-pandemic outpouring, but the quality was just as high among the 13 rides that officially had their covers pulled off – plus an unofficial wildcard in MPW Performance’s balls-out twin-turbo 596ci Capri, which made its anticipated debut via the Racer Industries trade stand.

Raising the quality even further was the new Show Car Hall of Fame, drawing together some of Australia’s most successful and iconic show cars. The long list included Mick Fabar’s carbon-neutral ZERO’D XR Falcon, the classic SUBLIME Nissan S15, and Darrell Leemhuis’s Summernats Grand Champ-winning Holden Rodeo.
