Naica’s crystal cave was first discovered by miners in 1910 and is home to giant selenite crystals. These are made of the mineral gypsum, with the largest crystal measuring 12 metres in length and four metres thick. Heat from the magma below aided in the formation of these giant gems, but it also makes a visit to this underground wonder extremely uncomfortable. Temperatures of 58 degrees Celsius have been recorded in this 120-metre-deep cave, preventing access to tourists. When scientists investigate the towering translucent structures, they need to wear special cooling suits to survive in this jagged crystalline world.
