Make more of environmental portraiture

hile there is a lot to be said for cropping in on your subject or shooting in a home studio, sometimes it’s a good idea to zoom out and include elements of the person’s surroundings – in other words, environmental portrait photography. Documentary and news photographers regularly use this approach to add context and a sense of narrative flow, but any portrait shooter can benefit from this approach, by including elements in the picture to help define who your subject is.
