Henry was also made regent of France and successor to the throne, a right that was also granted to his children. Unfortunately for Henry, he died in 1422, before he could inherit, but his right to the French throne now passed to his infant son Henry VI. John, Duke of Bedford, was named his regent.
The Treaty of Troyes inevitably led to dissention among the nobles of the realms. There were those that honoured the treaty, from now on called ‘English’, and those who did not, who acknowledged the right of Charles VII as heir to the French throne, henceforth known as ‘French’. These distinctions make it easier to write about the battle, but at Verneuil, the English army contained lots of Normans and Burgundians and in the French army were Scottish, Italian, Spanish, and French troops.
