Uniting the children of two separate families comes with plenty of challenges. The children may not accept the authority of the new parent. New house rules may take time to get used to. Long-standing family rituals and traditions may seem strange to the newcomers, and the parents may bring into the home their own issues, such as complications around custody arrangements or feelings of guilt.
“Families are our support systems,” notes Cape Town therapist Samuel Waumsley. “Like a wolf pack, they're highly complex, with roles, responsibilities and rules for each member: each parent, and children. These systems are inevitably quite fine-tuned, with each member normally
