As we’ve highlighted, the light meter is tuned to 18% midtone, which means that when you point the Partial, value. If the subject is darker, you may want to dial in some negative exposure compensation to make the metered area darker. If it’s brighter than mid-tone, dial in positive exposure compensation. Evaluative metering is an ‘intelligent’ metering mode, and it essentially works out whether the subject needs to be made darker or brighter before it suggests an exposure. It factors in any compensation before displaying the aperture, shutter speed and ISO in the viewfinder. The advantage with this is that you can quickly take a shot and know that the exposure if not perfect, it’s likely to be in the right ballpark. The disadvantage is that you can’t be sure how Evaluative is interpreting the scene, and you may need to apply exposure compensation.
