FOR MANY of us, a knitted sock is the perfect project – small, portable, inexpensive to make, with interesting techniques to try, and endless stitch pattern options to enjoy. I was something of a latecomer to the world of handmade socks, but being surrounded by the hugely enthusiastic sock knitters here at The Knitter it was inevitable that I would get bitten by the bug. Today, a sock project is my go-to if I’m travelling, if I need a break from a large sweater project, or during those times when I feel like I’ve lost my knitting mojo, and need something small and soothing that I can focus on and finish quickly.
I’m very much in the middle of my sock knitting journey – I’ve made top-down and toe-up; lace, cable and colourwork designs; and tried a few different heel and toe types. But there are so many other ways of making socks which I haven’t tried yet, such as two-at-a-time - and from 1945.
