Picture this: It’s 1972 and Ford Australia is in the throes of releasing what till now has been its most important new model range – the locally-designed XA. Out there in the wider world, Australia is limbering up for an earth-shaking federal election, which by the end of the year sees the long-term Coalition government led by William McMahon tossed out in favour of the Labor crew led by Gough Whitlam. That was on the back of a catchy “It’s time” campaign complete with pop stars and actors in the TV ads.
Speaking of pop stars, a highlight among the usual dross on the charts that year was local band Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs with their hit, Most People I Know Think That Welcome to the seventies.
