HAVING discussed the requirements of the standard of excellence in previous articles, I now move on to the subject of actually planning to produce birds that resemble the model and therefore have a chance of success on the show bench.

I always simplify this by splitting the process under three titles: namely foundation, pedigree and selection. Here I will cover foundation.

Should breeding Yorkshires to the model be your aim, then it is vitally important to start out with the correct foundation stock. This is equally important for the totally new breeder and for more experienced breeders who are unhappy with their present quality.
