The journey is as important as the destination. Riders generally pick the best bike road to reach a destination and end up enjoying the journey as much as the destination. Sometimes, the journey itself can be the destination when you head to a specific road to ride it for the sheer pleasure of doing so.
It's often difficult to explain this concept to non-riders, who may only see roads as a means of getting from one place to another. They often don't understand the satisfaction motorcyclists experience as they master the challenges of riding that perfect line through a bend on a scenic road and the feeling of being one with the bike. Being out in the fresh air and able to smell forests or sea air, or look up at towering trees or mountains, or down into gorges as you lean into a corner are all things most drivers of tin-tops never experience.
The journey versus the destination question was examined by four of us on two bikes when we explored the American north-east before heading south to the Blue Ridge Parkway, an iconic American road that is a destination in itself. The north-eastern corner of the USA is called New England and has a rich history dating back to the arrival of the British in 1620. It is also well known for its scenery and good motorcycle roads.
