Fit not Fat
WHEN IT COMES to feeding our horses we must be incredibly careful. From a welfare point of view, we know that the risk of laminitis, insulin dysregulation and joint strain are all increased in overweight horses, but these aren't the only risks. In terms of performance, simply put, fat horses don't move as well — you take away the quality of the horse.
Nothing looks better than a fit horse. I can't stand pockets of fat. Once a horse has fat pockets it can be difficult to get rid of them, especially in certain places. Even after being on a diet, some will still retain large fat pockets despite being in good or even poor condition elsewhere. The key is to try and keep their waistlines in check in the first place.
