All's well that ends well

SCHALK'S STORY

Shortly after being appointed as a journalist for the forerunner of this travel magazine, the editor at the time sent me off to visit the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal for a few days, with the task of returning with an enticing camping article, in particular highlighting the joys of a winter getaway to the region.

This was one of my first assignments, and I was raring to go. I packed the car and hit the N1. The plan was to drive to Bloemfontein, spend the night, and then continue around Lesotho and through Harrismith to KZN.

My journey to Bloemfontein went smoothly. I found a room for the night and hit the road early theme to start making alternative plans for my final destination. A tropical storm had hit the South Coast the previous night, and the authorities were closing beaches.
