David McClister

PHOTOGRAPHER

David McClister has built a career photographing the who’s who of the music industry, including Dolly Parton, Mavis Staples, Willie Nelson, and Taylor Swift. “I think I’m drawn to this subject because of my love of music and my utter lack of musical ability,” says McClister, whose images have appeared in Rolling Stone and Billboard. “I can’t sing or play an instrument, but I’m a huge record collector.” During his photo shoot with Lucinda Williams (p. 144) at a farm outside Nashville, the two discovered their shared affection for the blues and listened to songs by Memphis Minnie and Sister Ola Mae Terrell.
